Evans Case

The federal high court in Lagos awardsN2M to Mr Okwuchukwu Obiechina the brother-in-law of alleged kidnap kingpin Chukwudueme Onwuamadike popularly known as Evans.

Justice Muhammed Idris declares that Obiechina's arrest and detention by the police was unconstitutional. Mr Obiechina has filed a fundamental right enforcement suit over his arrest by the police before the court

The judge also ordered the police to tender a public apology to Obiechina to be published in two national dailies.

Meanwhile, the controller of prisons in Lagos, Tunde Ladipo has said that high-profile detainees like Evans do not get preferential treatment inside the prison contrary to rumours making the rounds. According to Ladipo, there were laid-down rules that guide how prisoners should be treated.

In his words: “We have rules and regulations that guide them. Evans is like every other inmate in the prison. There is nothing special about him. It is just that there is so much hype about him being a suspected kidnapper. As far as I am concerned, he is an ordinary inmate.”
