Taraba Communal Crisis: Gov. Ishaku Appeals for Calm Between Fulani and Mambilla

Taraba State

Taraba state governor Ishaku Darius has called for calm in the wake of tension that crisis may again break out in the Mambilla area of the state.
The governor said this after meeting with the stakeholders and residents of Mambila, a predominantly farming community with a long drawn battle with Fulani herdsmen.

The appeal was made by the Senior Special Assistant on media and publicity, Mr. Sylvanus Yakubu Giwa while briefing Newsmen on the effort made by the state Government to quell the the crisis that erupted between the Mambila and Fulani tribes over land issues in Sardauna Local Government area.
Sylvanus Giwa maintained that, prior to the eruption of the crisis, Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku had set up a committee headed by the state Deputy Governor, Engr. Haruna Manu to holistically look into the various land disputes in the area with a view to addressing it peacefully and amicably for the common good of the people of the area.
The Governor’s spokesman stated that the committee had hardly started gathering information that would aid it in its investigation only to be interupted by a full blown crisis between the two tribes which has led to loss of lives and the destruction of property including farmlands and animals.
The Senior Special Assistant explained that as a measure to immediately nip the crisis in the butt, Security Agencies which included the Police, Army and Civil Defense were immediately mobilised, but lamented that the Elders of Fulani petitioned the state Government for not doing enough to stop the crisis.
He further explained that there was no way that the state Government will mobilised security apparatuses to a crisis area without adequately mobilising them with needed incentives that would motivate and enhance their performance to discharge their duties effectively.

Accordingly, Sylvanus Giwa said the call by Fulani Elders Forum in Gembu, Sardauna local government area on the Federal Government to evoke some portions of the Constitution of the country to declare state of emergency in Taraba State was uncalled for and described such utterances as the handiwork of the opposition party in the state meant to distabilise the administration of Arc. Darius Dickson Ishaku for their selfish reasons.
The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity remarked that since the present administration took over the mantle of leadership in the state, it has been ceaselessly advocating for peaceful coexistence among all the tribes, with the a Clarion call, “give me peace and I will give you development” and stressed that, Governor Ishaku places premium importance on the issue of peace and not anarchy in the state.
Speaking on the issue of taking care of the IDPs, the Governor’s media disclosed that, the state Government has directed the state Emergency Management Agency,  SEMA to immediately identify where people of the affected areas are currently seeking refuge with a view to giving them immediate assistance in terms of medicine, shelter and food.
The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Darius Ishaku on Media and Publicity, Sylvanus Giwa used the opportunity to appeal to the people on the Mambila Plateau to imbibe the attitude of living in peace with one another and as well learn to tolerate each other’s inadequacies for peace to reign in the area.
He stressed that, dialogue is the best means of resolving crisis and not violence.
